Assessments.
For this unit, I will be testing my students in two areas: content and real-world goals.
OVERALL: I will be assessing students on a daily basis as to whether they are participating in the discussions, in the reflections, etc. They will be journaling their pre and post discussions during the entire unit, so I will keep a watchful eye on their ability to reflect as well as their use of the vocabulary. They will also be presenting their opinions to the class after either researching them or just using their background knowledge on the topic. They will compile their vocabulary into lists which will be graded in either the participation or homework category; they will be able to organize these lists however they would like. This will be a chance for students to organize their learning in their own way, as the UDL as shown us is the best way. Throughout the unit, students will read stories, watch movies, read an excerpt from a novel, participate in class discussions (online or in class), and hopefully take ownership of the information. At the very end of the unit, students will write a final journal summarizing what they learned, how they learned it, and a paragraph on whether they liked it or not; thus testing them on their ability to reflect and self assess. As a bonus for me, I will ask them to include anything that they would’ve done differently, so then I will know what to suggest/change for next year.
CONTENT: There will be two assessments, which will both be taken from the IB Group 2 Language B Guide. One is a reading comprehension over social relationships where students will read a short text and answer IB-style questions. The other is an individual oral interview. For this, students will be given two photos relating to the unit (Social Relationships). They will choose ONE of the two photos and will have 15 minutes to gather their thoughts. During this fifteen minutes they are only allowed to write down 10 fragments to help them prep for their 4-5 minute presentation to the teacher. After the presentation, the teacher will ask continuing/furthering questions for another 5-6 minutes. Students will be graded with the Standard Level Individual Oral Rubric. These are both IB assessments, but they are also very difficult to pass if students just KNOW the information, they have to have UNDERSTOOD the content in order to be successful on these assessments.
