Outline.
Perspective, Empathy, and Self-Knowledge are three of the six facets of understanding set by Wiggins & McTighe that I will focus on for this unit. As an added benefit, my students will also gain some of the IB Learner Profile characteristics; specifically, my students will become open-minded communicators who are reflective.
My students will know how to communicate better in oral and written forms about social relationships; they will be better at listening, understanding what they read, and interpreting spoken directions - mainly due to the fact that they will have a larger vocabulary. They will also become good at reflection through practicing it in their blogs. By writing in a blog, they will also increase their vocabulary because they will use new terms more often both in speaking and in writing.
My assessments will be both formal and informal. Informally, I will assess students’ writing in their blogs, focusing on their vocabulary, their content, their organization, and their ability to reflect on what they’ve learned. Technology will aid me in “gathering” their blogs with their multiple pieces of writing since it will be accessible online. It will also be easier for the students to collect their vocabulary and track its usage throughout their journals. But the most important part is that the students will be able to share with others more easily. My hope is that they will read and reflect on each other’s journals. For the formal assessments, students will not be able to use any technology since I will be testing their understanding of the content and their vocabulary gained from the experiences. They will be tested in both speaking and in reading comprehension, both of which will be IB-style formal assessments.
